I was watching this dog training show today and realized more than ever that the same techniques that is used to train dogs can be used to train humans as well. We are going to try to demonstrate how this technique can used on dogs, in business, in sports and in life.

The dog trainer was always talking about how first you must get control of the dog or situation, next you can use teaching techniques to get the “animal “to achieve the goal you are looking for, and finally you can reward it with treat, so as to solidify the teaching. When I studied psychology I took a class called Psychology of Learning in which it talked about 4 different ways in which to do this. We are not going to bore you with all 4 of these techniques, so let’s just concentrate on the one which is do something good and get a treat.

The dog trainer trained a dog for a girl and then noticed that when the girl took the dog she started to crazily play with the dog and the dog went nuts. He quickly took CONTROL of the situation and told her that “you must be the boss and teach the dog that you are in control or the dog will run all over you”. He was actually training her to train the dog properly.

This brings us to Step number one as it pertains to sports. The Houston Texans handled the situation well with Ryan Mallet. He was acting like an adolescent Dog and “pissing” everywhere and pouting, and being late and missing flights. They tried to take control but it didn’t work and finally they were forced to let someone else train the dog. The Cowboys are in disarray after Jerry Jones gave Greg Hardy a treat after he misbehaved on the field. This will only lead to problems in the future.

Step 2 is once you have control you must train the dog. The Giants lost control of Jason Pierre Paul when blew off his hand and wouldn’t speak to them at the hospital. His agent was in control the situation. So what did the Giants do they waited and took control of the situation back when Paul came in after the preseason and wanted to be paid they said “sorry come back later when we feel you are healthy”. Once Paul started to lose paychecks he started to listen. So first they took control, and then taught him to behave like and adult and buy into the Giant Program.

Step 3 is giving the treat. After Paul lost around 7 million dollars, they finally signed him to a contract that has very little guaranteed money and lots of easily attained (treats) or incentives. If he plays well and shows up and does his job he will receive almost all of the 8 million dollars left on the franchise tag.

This is how you should run a business, an army, a family and your life. When I was 18 I was an unattainable Pup and the 2 coaches who I hated tried to do this but I refused to obey. They knew that the only way to get things done in this world is by having the leaders in control. Vince Lombardi knew this, Winston Churchill knew this. This is something Joe Philbin did not know and Dan Campbell does know down in Miami. This is this is something that Donald Trump does know and Barrack Obama does not.

So the point of this story is when You meet a new girlfriend , are training your dog or your child, teaching a sports team, running a business or an army or even when it pertains to your own emotional state, the secret is as simple as was shown in the Dog show. First get control, Then teach the other (or yourself), then you will be rewarded with a treat. When you call America’s Bookie to place you bets this week, get control of your emotions, then learn as much as you can about the teams and I promise you in the long run you will get your treat. Happy Halloween everyone.
